WD and Jim are right on the money, for those of you who haven't or arent gonna do the white spacerthing ,you still need to richen up idle circut of carb(air-fuel mixture screw)i believe is out 1 full turn (factory setting)you'll notice difference in idle immediately when you turn screw out and even without doin white spacer removal bacfires will decrease.Ever since i've done this i only have to 1/2 choke to start no matter how cold it is i run it about 2 minutes this way and then I'm able to push choke in all the way.i start my bike at least once aweek all winter and at least go around the block once or twice has never failed me yet.always had stalling problem after i thought it was warm until i came to stop she stalled until i did the above .white spacer removed later for better throttle response at crusin speed .do it you will be much happier with your savage .probably last bike i'll ever own ,satisfied savage owner.have fun Giro
